Rear brake experience

I've been riding my 2018 GSX-S1000 and I can't help but feel like the rear brake is quite underwhelming, I know you can adjust the pedal height, and I've gone through all the usual maintenance but it still seems to have way too much travel before it bites. Is this just how these bikes are? I've thought about different pedal ratios, maybe a different master, or even just adjusting how I ride it, but wanted to see what experiences others have had.

@oscar wilde have you tried swapping out the brake pads? The stock pads are often a compromise between longevity and performance.
An aggressive, semi metallic or sintered brake pad from a brand like EBC or Brembo will give you a much better initial bite and a firmer feel.
It's a relatively cheap and easy fix that can make a huge difference in how the brake feels to you
